Around 8:00 AM, your driver will collect you from your riad or hotel in Marrakech to begin your private 4-day journey from Marrakech to the Sahara. We'll first cross the High Atlas Mountains via the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass, passing traditional Berber villages tucked into the landscape along the way. Our first major stop is Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage kasbah that has served as the backdrop for Hollywood classics like Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and Prince of Persia, offering a striking window into Morocco's traditional fortress architecture and culture. After exploring the kasbah, enjoy a Berber lunch at a nearby restaurant with panoramic views over the site. We'll continue to Ouarzazate, with an optional visit to the Atlas Film Studios, before reaching the palm oasis of Skoura and its notable Kasbah Amridil. From there, the journey continues along the celebrated "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs," offering sweeping views over a valley dotted with small oases and countless ancient fortifications, until we reach Kalaat M'Gouna in the Roses Valley — renowned for its annual Rose Festival each May. We arrive in the Dades Valley by evening for an overnight stay in a riad, with dinner and breakfast included.
After a traditional, hearty breakfast, we continue through roads flanked by ancient kasbahs and picturesque Berber villages within the Dades Canyon, taking in scenery once traveled by caravans until the early 20th century. From there, we head to the Todra Gorges, a stunning 15-kilometer valley lined with palm groves, where towering grey and pink canyon walls rise dramatically alongside the road — perfect for a walking exploration of the gorge. We then continue toward Merzouga and the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes, where a roughly 90-minute camel trek carries you deep into the desert to your authentic Sahara camp. Along the way, we'll pause among the dunes to watch a beautiful sunset, with the option to try sandboarding if you're up for it. Once night falls, you'll be welcomed at camp with a glass of mint tea, followed by Berber music around a campfire, a delicious dinner, and an unforgettable night spent beneath a truly spectacular starlit sky in a nomadic desert camp.
After breakfast, we set off to explore the fascinating surroundings of the Merzouga Sahara, beginning with a visit to local nomadic families who still live a simple, traditional life under tents, raising goats, camels and sheep. We'll spend some time learning about their way of life before continuing to the old lead mine at Mifiss. Our 4WD desert tour then takes us to Khamlia, a small village about 5 km from central Merzouga, home to the Gnawa community, who have preserved their distinctive culture, traditions and music — you'll have the chance to listen to a live performance. Along the way, we'll also stop at a vintage 4WD car museum and a desert oasis, with lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we visit Rissani, Morocco's first imperial city, about 30 minutes from Merzouga, where we'll browse the area's largest souk, a bustling marketplace serving communities from Rissani, Merzouga and Erfoud alike. We'll return to Merzouga in time to enjoy another beautiful sunset over the dunes, followed by dinner and an overnight stay in a charming riad facing the dunes.
On the final day of your desert journey from Marrakech to Fes, rise early for the chance to enjoy a beautiful sunrise from your riad in Merzouga (optional), followed by a delicious breakfast. We then set off toward Fes, leaving the magical desert behind as we pass through Errachidia. Along the way, we'll stop for a panoramic view of the Ziz Valley, one of southeastern Morocco's largest oases, rich with palm groves and olive trees, before continuing through Midelt. After lunch, we drive on to Azrou to spot macaque monkeys within Morocco's largest cedar forest. A short stop follows in the alpine town of Ifrane before we complete the journey to Fes, bringing your 4-day desert adventure from Marrakech to a close.
