Around 8:00 AM, your driver-guide will collect you from your riad or hotel in Fes to begin your 4-day journey across the Middle Atlas Mountains toward the Sahara, ending in Marrakech. Our first stop is Ifrane, often called the "Switzerland of Morocco," where you can take in its striking alpine scenery and forests. From there, we continue to Azrou to spot Barbary macaque monkeys in the cedar forest, with time to pause for photos along the way. We then continue to Midelt for an optional lunch at a local restaurant, before heading toward the Sahara via the Tizi n'Talghamt pass, taking in views of the Ziz Gorges as we approach Errachidia. Along the way, we'll stop to enjoy panoramic views over the Ziz Valley and capture a few memorable photos. The journey continues to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes via the Tafilalet Oasis, passing through Aoufous and Erfoud — the latter known for its fossil museums and dates, with an optional visit to a local fossil workshop. On arrival in Merzouga, enjoy free time for activities like ATV quad adventures, capped off with a beautiful sunset over the Erg Chebbi dunes. Overnight stay at a riad near the dunes.
After breakfast, we explore the fascinating surroundings of the Merzouga Sahara, beginning with a visit to local nomadic families who still live a simple, traditional life under tents, raising goats, camels and sheep. We'll spend some time learning about their way of life before continuing to the old lead mine at Mifiss. Our 4WD desert tour then takes us to Khamlia, a small village about 5 km from central Merzouga, home to the Gnawa community, who have preserved their distinctive culture, traditions and music — you'll have the chance to listen to a live performance. Along the way, we'll also stop at a vintage 4WD car museum and a desert oasis, with lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we visit Rissani, Morocco's first imperial city, about 30 minutes from Merzouga, where we'll browse the area's largest souk, a bustling marketplace serving communities from Rissani, Merzouga and Erfoud alike. Afterward, we set off on a camel trek into the Merzouga dunes to witness an unforgettable sunset, with the option to try sandboarding in the heart of Erg Chebbi. You'll spend a special night at a Sahara desert camp, sleeping in a private nomadic tent just as the Berbers do, with a delicious dinner, music, and an unforgettable starlit sky filled with shooting stars as you explore the desert by night. Overnight stay at a Berber camp in Merzouga.
Rise early to enjoy a breathtaking sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. After breakfast and a shower at camp, we return to Merzouga village either by camel or 4WD, whichever you prefer, before driving to Rissani to visit the area's largest traditional market. From there, our journey continues through several Berber (Amazigh) villages, including Mellab, Tinjdad and Jorf — the latter known for the wells of an old irrigation system, worth a stop to explore. Lunch will be served in Mellab or Tinjdad (optional). Our next stop is the Todra Valley, home to one of southeastern Morocco's oldest and most beautiful oases, along with the dramatic Todra Gorges, whose canyon walls rise roughly 300 meters, carved over time by the force of water — a popular spot for climbers and hikers alike. We finish the day at the Dades Gorge, where you'll spend your second night in an overnight stay at a riad.
On the final day of your journey from Fes to Marrakech, enjoy breakfast while taking in the breathtaking views of the Dades Gorge. We then continue toward Marrakech through the Roses Valley and the palm groves of the Skoura Oasis. Our next stop is Ouarzazate, with a quick visit to the Kasbah of Taourirt. After a further 27 km on the road, we reach the celebrated Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has served as the backdrop for Hollywood classics including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and Prince of Persia, reflecting the exotic beauty of traditional Moroccan fortress architecture and culture. After exploring the kasbah, we continue through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, bringing us into the Red City of Marrakech, where your journey comes to an end.
